Spain’s Exciting Move to a 37.5-Hour Work Week! Updated

Wow, Spain is making some seriously game-changing moves in the labor market right now! They’re pushing forward with this fantastic reform to cut the standard work week from 40 hours down to just 37.5 hours – and get this – without cutting anyone’s salary! How amazing is that?! Let’s see how the 37.5-hour work week will play out.

What’s Happening Right Now

So here’s the scoop! This reduction is part of a bold agreement between PSOE (Central Left Party: Partido Socialista Obrero Español, Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) and Sumar (Left Party) in their coalition government. Yolanda Díaz, the  Second Deputy Prime Minister, and her team at the Ministry of Labor are driving this forward, and they’re currently in talks with unions and business groups to iron out all the details.

At the moment, this regulation was approved by the Council of Ministers and subject to ratification by the Spanish Congress.

The Ministry of Labor has proposed a timeline for reducing the weekly working week to 37.5 hours. All companies have until December 31, 2025 to ensure that their collective bargaining agreements* comply with the reduction to 37.5 hours per week; this will be implemented gradually. The government has confirmed that the salaries will not face any reductions.

Collective Bargaining Agreement Information*
  • In Spanish: convenio colectivo
  • Outlines the basic conditions for employees such as salaries, leaves, medical hours
  • Differs across regions and industries

Isn’t that exciting? Millions of Spanish workers could soon have more free time without losing a single euro!

How This Might Play Out

There are several fantastic ways this could work in practice:

Just Work Less Hours – Simple as That!

  • Imagine leaving work 30 minutes earlier EVERY DAY! 🙌
  • That adds up to about 130 fewer working hours per year
  • And the best part? You’d still take home the SAME paycheck!

Some Might Even See Pay Increases!

  • Get this – some companies with existing 37.5-hour contracts might bump up salaries
  • Those with reduced schedules (caregivers, for example), will proportionally receive a salary increase
  • That means better pay for the same hours for many workers
  • More money AND less work? Yes please!

Extra Time Off Options!

  • Some creative companies might keep the 40-hour structure but give you:
    • A whopping 16 EXTRA vacation days each year!
    • Long weekends all year round!
    • Or maybe even four-day work weeks! Can you imagine?!

Different Solutions for Different Industries

The coolest part is how flexible this could be:

  • Service companies might let you set your own hours
  • Factories could offer compressed work weeks
  • Government offices might just close earlier each day (yes, even earlier than they already do…)

The Road Ahead

Of course, there are some hurdles to jump:

  • Some business groups are nervous about costs (but they always are, right?)
  • Companies will need to rethink how they schedule their workforce
  • There might be differences between regions and industries

But Spain isn’t alone in this amazing trend! Belgium, Iceland, and parts of Germany are all experimenting with shorter work weeks too. Spain is joining this incredible wave of work-life balance innovation!

Just imagine having more time for family, hobbies, or just relaxing without financial stress. Wouldn’t that be absolutely incredible? Spain could be pioneering a whole new way of working that prioritizes people’s well-being alongside productivity! Spain also guarantee digital disconnect time each evening (so you do not need to answer your boss’s call at 9:00 PM) and to complete a digital registry of hours worked.

This is such an exciting time for Spanish workers – I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!

What do you think? Will Spain be able to make it a reality? Or will it just cause workers to clock out but continue working?
